I believe that this is the type of electric razor that, if cared for, will last many years.
This razor is the same brand that I purchased 9 years ago and it finaly went out only because I could not replace the battery because of the age of the razor, so that was a lot of great shaves in 9 years.
Lastly, this razor shaves so close that it gives almost as close of a shave as my streight razor.

Since I *never* shave when I am not in range of an outlet, the concept of a battery-powered shaver is ludicrous. And this one is powerful, quiet, and gives a close shave without pulling and biting (like the Norelco).
Thank goodness Amazon had a factory reconditioned model for sale. It's as good as new, and I'm looking forward to many years of comfortable shaves.

(More customer reviews)Of course, the title may not be saying much, since I use a shaver until it nearly falls apart, replacing the rechargeable batteries as they die. My last two shavers were a Remington Interceptor (which has the comb/trimmer between the cutters) and an ancient Remington triple screen. I have a fairly light beard, but do have a problem with hairs lying close to the skin. This has meant that even with the Interceptor I've had to use the side trimmer to cut those wayward hairs before the screen cutter would finish the job. The side cutters on both of my Remingtons failed within two months of each other, so a new shaver was mandatory. My son suggested I try a Braun.
I looked over the specs and decided on a Series 3. I felt the Series 5 and 7 were a bit too gimmicky for the price, and the Series 1 lacked the "comb", as Braun calls it, between the cutters. I had chosen the 370cc because I wanted to try out the cleaning/charging station, but the local Bed, Bath and Beyond store only had the 390cc in stock. With BB&B's liberal expiration date policy on store 20% coupons, the price was as good or better than anywhere else.
With the 390, I never use the trimmer, except for an occasional trim of my nearly non-existent side burns. The "comb" and cutters will grab those low-lying hairs, with a few extra passes, like no shaver I've ever used, and even take care of the occasional wild ear hair. The shave doesn't compare to a blade, but it is as good or better than any shaver I've ever used, and I have yet to get a shaver burn from it.
I've had it for about 5 weeks, and am in the process of running the battery full down before recharge three times, as recommended, to get full capacity. The first charge lasted about 3 weeks. The second charge is a little more than half gone, so it looks like 3 weeks on a charge is typical for my shaving. The shaver "Clean me" light comes on after every two or three shaves, so if you clean/charge it every few days, it will be ready to go when you have to travel. I drop it in the cleaner/charger daily, but don't plan to push the charger connection down until it needs cleaning, once I've gone through my full discharge cycles. When cleaning, the cleaning light stays on long enough for the alcohol-based cleaning fluid to evaporate, indicating that the shaver is dry enough to use. However, you can take off the head and run both the head and the shaver under the tap to clean it on the road. Even between cleanings, with the shaver in the station, the head will have a nice clean "lemony" smell, due to the proximity of the cleaning solution. It comes with a nice hard-side case for travel that should prevent any damage banging around in a suitcase.
At this point, if I had it to do over again, I would go with this shaver without a second thought.

(More customer reviews)I bought this shaver to replace my old Norelco shaver that I'd been using for many years, and that finally broke. This one was about double the price of that one, but I'm very disappointed to have to deal with the large "cleaning system" that came with the new shaver. The picture on Amazon shows the shaver in a cute little stand; the reality is that it comes with a huge cleaning stand that I have no room for. It seems the electric shaving folk want to get into the razor/razor blades game, by selling cleaning solution for the shavers. I'm not sure how important this is; my old one lasted very well with just a weekly "dry clean". It also seems environmentally unfriendly to be wasting some water every day, and throwing out a plastic bottle every month or so.
In addition to the cleaning stand being bulky, a terrible design decision is that you can't leave the shaver plugged into it, because it will harm battery life. Having something this big is bad enough, but having to unplug it all the time is ridiculous.
The packaging is the old horrible packaging, with unopenable plastic over everything, not the new Amazon environmentally friendly packaging.
On the other hand, the shaver works as well as the old one, and you can just ignore the cleaning stand if you want, since the recharger can plug directly into the shaver. I'd probably be perfectly happy with the shaver if it had come that way; the extra stuff just seems wasteful.

(More customer reviews)I've owned Norelco, Remington, Braun, Panasonic, and Wahl. Of the lot, the Wahl has provided the closest shave with the greatest comfort. It has also been the most durable. It's beginning to show its age now, so I probably will replace it soon, but after more than 10 years of reliable service, it's still chugging along. I'm down to the last of three screens that came with the unit. The trimmer still works. The charger "stand"--a cheap little device that relied on gravity to make the electrical contact--never really worked well. I got tired of messing with it and just plugged the cord directly into the shaver. That worked fine for about 6 years, until the contacts in the plug loosened to the point wherein they wouldn't work reliably. I cut the plug off and replaced it with a couple of crimp-style splice connectors, which I tightly crimped onto the cord but crimped only enough to make a snug fit on the shaver contacts. I've been running it that way for the past 4 years, and it works great.
If that seems like a lot of fuss to endure for a shaver I've given a 5-star rating, here's a bit of context that should help to explain. The other shavers I've used have never given me more than a few years of service before they died. Their biggest consistent deficiency was failure to hold a charge; with no way to connect the power cord directly to the shaver, that's the end of the shaver's useful life. While they did function, none had ALL of the Wahl's advantages. Some were comfortable but didn't shave closely enough; or shaved closely but ravaged my face; or didn't have a trimmer; or pulled the hairs (OUCH!); or the screen was too fine or prone to clogging. The Wahl is the only shaver that had the best of all those features, and still provided a cord configuration that enabled me to keep the doggone thing running...and it's still running!
So, if you're not inclined to futz with a power cord, fair enough; deduct 4 years from my 10 years of reported usage, and there's your basis of comparison. Of course, it has been 10 years or more since I tried any of the other shavers. Maybe they've all improved in that time...even the Wahl. But based on my experience with the venerable old shaver I'm still using, when it finally dies, I'll buy another Wahl with confidence.

(More customer reviews)This is my first electric shaver in several years after switching to a Gillette Fusion for the past decade or so. I had a small Braun travel shaver that I would use on occasion that would actually give me a closer shave than the blades I was using. I also got tired of purchasing the refills for the Fusion system and decided to make a change. After considering the price point of the various Braun series shavers, I decided on series 3 and then went shopping. I was actually looking for one of the 3-series without the big cleansing systems. Frankly, I don't want to give up a big hunk of counter space for a razor and I have read that you can suck a lot of money into the cleaner refills if you use it regularly. As fate would have it, the only series 3 I could find locally was the 350, so I went ahead.
So far I am about a week into owning it and love it. I took it out of the package, put the cleaning system back in the box and plugged it in directly with the cord. I am getting great shaves from it so far, closer than what I was getting with even a new blade on the Fusion. I find the best results shaving about 10 minutes after I'm out of the shower once my face is dry but clean. It takes a couple times over each area to get it all, and the neck is not always perfect the first time but it is getting it all with just a bit of work. I prefer a couple extra passes from different directions with good results to what I was getting before.
The movement in the shaving heads hugs the face nicely, the middle cutter gets the longer hairs well, the trimmer works, and so far no irritation at all from this. The included travel case is great for storing it in the drawer. As for cleaning it, I haven't yet used the cleaning base, but taking the top off and quickly knocking out the hair collected, followed by a quick puff of air has been enough to clean it out and get the cleaning light to turn off. I'll probably look for a small bottle of sewing machine lubricant to keep it working well. That should pay off quickly compared to the cleaning refills.
I don't have a heavy beard or a real sensitive face, so your mileage may vary. But I am totally satisfied so far with my purchase.

(More customer reviews)I've been trying a lot of shavers lately and I have to say that the R-7130 gives a really nice close comfortable shave. I was surprised how much I liked it. It's a very easy shave and I didn't get any razor burn at all. The digital charge indicator is very nice. I don't think I could be without one anymore. I like to know the minutes of charge time left so I don't have to pack the cord when going away. It is a very solid well build unit. It has some weight so it feels good in your hand. The one thing that I did find lacking was a case and charging stand.
Compared to other shavers I've tried:
Philips Norelco Arcitec 1090 (Comes with cool accessories) -- Sleeker, cooler, and a little bit better shave than the R-7130 but twice the price.
Philips Norelco 8240XL (Comes with a case) -- not quite as nice of a shave as the R-7130
Philips Norelco 8040X Moisturizing Shaver (Comes with case and stand) -- Hard to compare since this is a wet shaver that you can use in the shower and the R-7130 is not. I like having them both.Pros:
- LCD digital charge indicator. Tells you how many minutes of charge are left. Mine started at 60 minutes after the first charge. That's almost a month of shaves.
- Very close smooth shave. It handled a 3 day growth with no problem. No razor burn at all.
- You can rinse it clean with water.
Cons:
- No Case. It would be nice to have a case to protect it. It has to lay in the drawer now.
- No stand. It has to lay there and charge.
Conclusion ==> A very nice shave for the price, but the lack of accessories is a bit disappointing.

As such I cannot compare this to any other electric shavers, so I will be comparing it to is my experience using old-fashioned shaving gel (Sensitive Skin formulation) and a Gillette Mach 3 Turbo. I have been using the Gillette Sensor line since I was 18 - that's close to 22 years. Hopefully people considering the purchase of their first electric shaver can benefit from my experience. My star rating will reflect my overall opinion and can change over time.
Now that the 30-day trial has been completed, here are my final conclusions:
1 - This electric shaver does not irritate my skin at all. This is the main reason that I have switched to using it on a daily basis.
2 - The closeness of a blade is superior to an electric shaver, but this electric shaver provides a 'close enough' shave for most occasions. You may need to take a minute for a quick evening shave if you have a date and want a kissable face.
3 - The one caveat is that, once a week, I need to use a razor to clean off a small patch of hairs at the base of my neck that the electric shaver cannot seem to shave properly.
4 - The electric shaver is definitely quicker. It's also portable. Now I know why so many frequent fliers carry them around.
In short, I am a convert. I'm glad that I committed to taking a full month to try the product out, as I probably would have given up in the first week without that commitment.
A couple of these tips may be helpful to someone new to an electric shaver:
1 - Do not press too hard. Gently slide the shaver across your face.
2 - Do not lift the shaver from your face. It shaves whether it is moving forward, back or side to side.
3 - Try different angles and paths for different parts of your face. If you cannot effectively shave a particular part of your face with a standard motion, try something different - like a circular motion perhaps - and see what happens.
4 - Sideburns are actually pretty easy to handle. Just use the shaver right up to where you want the sideburns to end. You don't get any big gouges.
BELOW ARE MY DAILY NOTES
June 24, 2010 - Razor charged overnight. I used it after my shower. My first thoughts are that the electric razor did not shave nearly as close as my Sensor, and it took a lot longer to get a passable result. The electric razor worked especially poorly on my neck.
June 25th - This is an experiment. Experiments require variables that you can control for. I figure these are the variables, and these are the variables I will be controlling for: 1 - used before or after the shower. 2 - Amount of pressure applied 3 - The hand doing the shaving 4 - Amount of time devoted to shaving.
Today I shaved the right side of my face pre-shower, and the left side post-shower. The left side seems marginally smoother than the right side, though neither is as good as my Sensor.
June 26th - at the end of yesterday, the left side was smoother. Not smooth, but smoother. One point for shaving after the shower. Today I continue the experiment with the same parameters - left side after shower, right side before shower.
June 27th - The post-shower side continues to be smoother. I think that it's safe to say at this point that shaving post-shower with this electric razor work best. One problem I noticed today is that there are a few hairs located at the lowest part of my neck that I shave which have been allowed to grow for a couple of days. This razor doesn't seem to be able to deal with that part of my neck well. I ended up using the trimmer to get them.
June 28th - This morning I'm shaving using VERY gentle pressure. It seems to work well, though again, I'm not getting s shave that is nearly as close as that provided by a razor.
June 29th - I was feeling a little scruffy at the end of the day yesterday, but that's par for the course. I will say that I have had no problems with skin irritation so far. Then again, as long as I keep changing the blades on my Sensor a couple of times per week.
June 30th - I had a revelation today - I was using shaving habits that I developed in decades of using a razor. I would pull the shaver in one direction, lift it up and reposition it somewhere else on my face. With the electric razor, that's a waste of time. I tried not lifting the razor from my face today, and shaving time was greatly reduced.
July 1st - Continued with the new method. Keeping the shaver on my face the entire time seems to be working very well.
July 2nd - Best shave so far. My cheeks actually feel almost as smooth as I can get with a razor. A few hairs at the base of my neck still present problems however.
July 3rd - I think I'm getting the hang of this. Next week I'll experiment with changing hands to see if that has an impact.
July 4th - I skipped shaving today.
July 5th - This is the first time that I have had to recharge the shaver - that's almost two weeks. Having not shaved yesterday I was wondering if I would get an extra close shave today. I did. The only problem that I keep running in to though are a few hairs on my neck. This device doesn't seem to be able to get them, no matter how long or short they are.
July 6th, 7th - I tried using different hands when shaving. It does not seem to have made any difference.
July 8th - the rogue hairs at the bottom of my neck have not been a problem. I guess that I am getting the hang of it.
July 9th - I shaved about an hour after my shower today. I think I was rewarded with a closer shave.
July 10th - I tried shaving an hour after my shower today and the result was, again, a better shave.
July 11th - I had an event today so I shaved with a razor. Now that I'm paying attention to the shaving process, I noticed a couple of things. I noticed that after shaving with the electric razor that, if I looked real close, I could see a bit of the dark hairs just below the skin. It wasn't a five o'clock shadow, but I could see the hair. I assumed that this was ONLY the case with the electric razor. After shaving with a standard razor however, I looked real close at my skin and could actually see the same thing. Has my beard changed, or has this always been the case and I just didn't know it.
July 12th - Back to the electric. I trimmed the sideburns a bit with the pop-up trimmer. I found it awkward, but it works. Then again, when using a standard razor, I end up trimming the sideburns on a weekly basis. The electric razor seems to be maintaining the sideburns better than the standard razor.
July 13th - Nothing new to report
July 14th - Nothing new to report
July 15th - I noticed today that my face is much less irritated than has been the case for the past few years. I haven't done anything different other than use the electric razor for a few weeks. I also saw a television commercial from one of the major razor companies emphasizing how their new razors are 'less irritating' than their old products. Have I been irritating my face for years by using what I thought was a great product?
July 16th to 24th - My face is definitely less irritated. There is absolutely no redness, in-grown hairs or patches of itchy skin. I'm definitely a happy camper. Battery life continues to meet expectations.

(More customer reviews)I have shaved exclusively with electric shavers my entire adult life. A bit of a ritual, but I always buy the new top of the line Norelco as soon as it becomes available. I currently have the 9195XL and the James Bond Spectra shavers. I pre-ordered this on Amazon and was anxious to get it as it clearly is a major departure from Norelco's typical styling. It arrived completely dead which I thought a bit odd, but charging it was the another first. No cord plugs into the bottom, it has two small round electrical contacts the size of ball bearings, one on each side. It charges in its stand or the travel case, a nice touch. The new head arrangement pivots FAR more than any prior model and it really hugs the contours of your face and neck. It is relatively quiet, shaves VERY fast and very close with no irritation. It is also extremely easy to clean. Each cutter/comb assembly hinges up, but remains attached to the head making it very easy to rinse out without worrying about the cutters and combs separating from one another. Since the whole head assembly must be replaced to get new cutters, I suspect that part will command a premium. The protective head guard will not come off until you physically remove it, another Norelco first.
Negatives? Price, depending on your perspective. The trimmer is worse than useless. it is quite small and mounted at an odd place in relation to the cutting head making it especially awkward to use. I use a separate beard and mustache trimmer as I have never found an electric shaver to have a good one.
Bottom line: this is Norelco's best shaver to date...at least for my face. It also comes with a 60 day money back guarantee, so you risk nothing by trying it....which you definitely should.

(More customer reviews)I am a devoted blade user (despite what the ads say, there are NO electrics that shave as close as a blade), but there are times that I just don't feel like going through the whole ritual of wet shaving. I've had all of the major electric brands at one time or another, including a Norelco rotary and an expensive Braun. I can say, without exaggeration, that this little eleven-buck throwaway shaver is the best electric I've ever owned or used.
When I ordered this, my main worry was that a battery-based shaver would be underpowered. Surprisingly, the lower power seems to be a plus. This shaver doesn't seem as aggressive and brutal as the plug-in and rechargeable models I've used. It doesn't irritate my skin but still has plenty of power to cut my very stiff hair.
Minor drawbacks: No trimmer; the clear plastic head protector doesn't stay on (but you can solve that with a rubber band); the cleaning brush is tiny and is hard to remove from the plastic protector (so I use a leftover brush from a previous shaver). Considering the price and performance, these are trivial issues.

(More customer reviews)Please note... I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because -- like any electric shaver I've ever owned -- it misses some hairs. The other reviewer is correct... you might have to use a razor on occasion to get 'em all. If you're familiar with electric shavers, you probably know exactly what we're talking about.
Having said that, I think it does as good a job as any other electric shaver I've owned. And I've spent a lot more than 10 or 11 bucks on those.
Bottom line: I like it and recommend it.
I use it as a travel shaver. It's "spunky" because it's battery powered. My rechargable starts to slow down after a couple of uses and, of course, needs to be charged. This one really has some energy and so far I haven't worn down the batteries. Battery life seems good since I'd be recharging by now with my other shaver.
You might want to carry a couple of extra batteries with you when you're traveling. But consider this... the shaver itself is self-contained. You don't have to carry a recharging cord (you don't need access to an outlet) and it flips around into it's own "case" so there's no case or pouch to carry around. As such, it's a good, very compact Braun shaver (with trimmer) and you sure can't beat the price.

Braun M90 Mobile Shaver, Silver, 1 Review

(More customer reviews)My previous Braun shaver lasted 20 years. So when it finally died recently, I had to look for another Braun. Here's what I like about the M-90: (1) it's relatively inexpensive, (2) it's flat, compact and lightweight so that it packs well for travel, (3) it seems to be well-made and all of the parts work well together, (4) the two included AA alkaline batteries lasted four months of daily use, which was a pleasant surprise (still, I would recommend getting a set of low self-discharge batteries, such as the Sanyo Eneloop).
My only reservations are (1) the foil cannot capture the few stray hairs that have grown long or have curled over, though I suspect this is a common problem with the foil design (I just bring along a disposable shaver to tackle this problem) (2) the foil screen on my previous Braun cracked and had to be replaced every couple of years, so I'll wait to see if Braun has made the screen more durable.
If you want a shaver for daily light trim and beard maintenance while traveling, then I would highly recommend the Braun M-90. It's a fine example of good design.
UPDATE: See my second reservation above. The original foil screen cracked after about a year of daily use. I'm not too surprised (still disappointing though), BUT a single replacement foil costs $13 including shipping. That's a third of the cost of the M-90. Frankly, I'm tired of this problem in the wide foil design. I wonder whether the floating head design would be more durable.

(More customer reviews)This is my second Norelco 1290x shaver from Amazon. The first one I got was defective since I was not able to turn it on after charging it. I must point out that Amazon was very prompt in replacing the defective shaver. This is what makes Amazon great in my opinion.
Let me say right up front, the 1290x will never match the shave of something like a Gillette Fusion razor. The reason I want an electric shaver is because it is quick and easy to use and it gives a reasonably close shave. The 1290x feels great in the hand, is well constructed and does shave a little smoother and closer than my previous high end Norelco the 6885xl with 9 years of almost daily use, which I am still very impressed with. If only the battery did not die.
PROS
1. newly designed UltraTrack shaving heads are very flexible allowing shaves to be close and comfortable.
2. 1290x body has quality construction, feel and design (very good looking)
3. made in the Netherlands
4. shaves closer than my previous high end Norelco and seems to be a better shaving experience (smoother)
5. feels good in the hand with it's rubberized back and weight distribution (well balanced)
6. good looking motion display as are the useful LED symbols and numbers
7. trimmer works good on sideburns and is easier to aim than previous Norelco
CONS
1. protective sliding plastic heads cover feels like it could scratch the unit, so I am not using it
2. stand is very wobbly on a rough surface because of its suction cup feet
3. cannot be used with a cord when not charged, need to wait 3 to 5 minutes to charge for one shave
4. the 3 rotary heads need to opened separately for cleaning after every shave (per manual and indicator)
5. expensive to replace heads (4 new heads would buy a new 1290x shaver!)
6. need to make sure you do not leave the shaver charging for more than 60 minutes (per manual)
7. needs to be in stand to charge and it needs to be unplugged when doneAlso, I feel the 'SensoTouch' name is somewhat misleading, since turning the 1290x on requires a firm press of the thumb against the on/off symbol. This shaver should not be confused with a true touch screen device like some remote controls, thermostats, phones etc.
Overall, I am very happy with the Norelco 1290x. This is now my 4th high end Norelco. It does sadden me however, that when the battery on this shaver no longer charges, it will either be a monument or a throw away item. This is not the case on my previous 3 high end Norelcos. They are still able to function with a cord allowing them to be used as a backup shaver or a travel shaver.
Keep in mind also that I do not have thick or dense stubble, so your results may vary.
