(More customer reviews)I've owned an old Sharper Image Ultra Groomer for years, and it still works very well. However, the charge no longer holds, and I've since run out of blade oil. I should have just gotten more blade oil for it, but I figured I'd "upgrade" with a new groomer. The features of the GR-T300 seemed impressive, so I decided to give it a shot.
Within 2 months (just over 1 month, actually), the new groomer will not hold a charge, and even while plugged in, the motor will eventually die. Obviously a faulty unit, but surprising being that my old groomer is STILL cutting after years and years of use. I keep my hair buzzed tight, so I use these groomers for beard and head hair. The old Ultra Groomer cuts nice and close w/ the shortest attachment (3mm), but this new trimmer on its lowest setting does not cut as close. I also noticed I had to go over several times for it to cut completely. Since it's obviously a faulty unit, it may all be related, but cutting length probably has nothing to do with that.
The guard is quite large, so it makes it very difficult for trimming head hair around/behind ears, as well as facial hair (mustache) near the nose. You just can't get into those tight spots because of that.
The vacuum feature was definitely nice. It won't catch every hair, but it does make a big difference. The motor is fairly quiet and smooth, that is, when it was working correctly. It also charged up quickly, and the timer is a nice addition. Of course, that all means nothing when the product dies, as did mine.
Overall I'm disappointed in this product, as I expected much more from Sharper Image, especially since I've had that old trimmer for so long. I'll be sending it back, and I am hoping to get a refund instead of a replacement, being that the cutting performance was nothing special. Instead of replacing it, I will be purchasing some blade oil for the old one.

I purchased this unit specifically for cutting my son's hair (3 years old). I've been doing it with a conventional buzzer since his first haircut and I figured this would eliminate the itchy-ness that bothers him. Unfortunately, this razor creates nothing but problems.
The razor works as advertised but it fails miserably with thin, fine hair like that of my son's. The hair trap mechanism uses a fine mesh screen to catch the hair similiar to a juicing machine. With very fine hair, it fails to capture a small portion of it since it easily passes through the screen mesh. Worse, the escaping hair is blown out the exhaust port of the razor and flies everywhere. After about 2 minutes of haircutting, about 20% of his hair was scattered all over the tile floor in a three foot radius of where he was sitting.
Another problem is that the suction doesn't seem to be very powerful. It relies heavily on gravity for the hair to fall towards the opening of the hair trap and then the suction takes over. In the normal cutting method of 'bottom to top' motion, it does a good job. If you use the razor sideways or upside down (ie: buzz the top of the head), there seems to be alot of loose hair that gets away.
One positive is that the blades are titanium coated and require no oil for the life of the unit. Another is that the unit has good vibration dampening so less "buzzing" action in your hand. Believe it or not, I think that this extra dampening is detrimental in cutting hair because you can't feel or hear the hair being cut with the unit. When creating a 'fade' from shorter to longer hair, it's difficult to get consistent results as compared to a conventional razor. Unit is slightly bulky in size due to the addition of the vacuum and hair trap.
Overall, I think this might be helpful for some people with thicker hair. I can easily see this razor being jammed with hair longer than 1-2" in length and with a relatively small hair trap, you will have to empty it often. Unless loose hair bothers you during the haircut, I wouldn't recommend buying it. Stick with a good conventional buzzer.

(More customer reviews)My wife bought this product for me, probably as much of a gift for herself as for me, as I'm sure she grew tired of seeing little hairs in and around the sink everytime I trimmed my goatee (no matter how hard one tries to clean them up a few stray hairs always seem to stick around). The concept sounds good: the Trim-n-Vac vacuums up your beard/moustache hairs as you trim them, instead of having them fall onto the sink or counter causing a big mess.
For the most part, the Trim-n-Vac delivers on its promise. While it does not successfully vacuum 100% of the hair being trimmed, it gets most of it, making post-trim clean up a much quicker and easier process.
The only real major complaint I have about this product is its sheer bulk. This is one of those products where I almost wish I had waited a few product generations to get one, assuming that eventually the size of this product will more closely resemble that of a standard moustache/beard trimmer. The product in its current form is simply so large that it is difficult to see what you're doing. This is especially a problem when I'm shaping/edging my goatee. Since so much of my face is obstructed by the Trim-n-Vac it is very difficult to insure that I'm trimming everything straight and evenly. During this portion of the beard trimming process I really begin to long for my much-smaller, non-vacuuming beard trimmer, which made it much easier for me to see what I was doing. Then I realize I have barely any clean-up to do and I don't miss it nearly as much.

I figured Shaver Outlet would send it to me in 7-10 days. It arrived in three. Unfortunately, it wouldn't hold a charge. I emailed Shaver Outlet, telling them that I wanted to return it for a good one. They emailed me right back, apologizing, saying there was no need to return the bad trimmer, and informing me that they were mailing me another one. It arrived in three days, too, and it works perfectly. Great product; easy to use the first time. And I got the good one in less overall time than I had expected for the original one anyway. A 5-star Shaver Outlet performance for sure!
EDIT (2010/12/21) Well, I've had this trimmer for about eight months now, and it's perfect. Trims quickly and evenly the first time you use it--zero learning curve. I used to use one of those tiny TV-advertised trimmers to trim my eyebrows. Took a couple of minutes. This Remington MB-40 will do that tiny job in about five seconds. Another BIG bonus with this thing is that it will run for several weeks on a full charge. My wife and I went on a three and one-half week road trip recently and I purposely didn't take the charger with me. Used the trimmer on my Hemingway-style beard every other day and it was still running at full speed when we got back. Since I didn't need to take the charger with me, I ran no risk of leaving it pugged into a motel room somewhere. I'd give this thing ten stars if I could.

For the past two and a half years, I have been using the Philips Norelco T980 Turbo Vacuum Trimmer, which is an earlier generation of the Qt4050. I've been generally satisfied with the T980, except that its NiCd battery won't hold a charge anymore. The Qt4050 has a big advantage in that it uses a Lithium-Ion battery, rare in products of this nature, though I expect it will become more common in the future. Li-Ion batteries last longer between charges and don't degrade as quickly as NiCd or NiMH batteries do. I also like that the Qt4050 includes a universal-voltage AC charger, unlike the T980 which was US voltage only.
Another advantage of the newer model is the height adjustment - there are more settings available and the setting is clearly indicated in inches and millimeters, whereas the T980 just had a 1-10 numbered dial. The T980's adjustment dial would sometimes get moved, especially if something pushed on the trimming comb (such as if it was packed for travel.) The newer design seems to be more resistant to that.
One change I do not care for is how one empties the vacuumed hair. On the T980, there was a generously-sized cup that just pulled out and you could tap over a wastebasket. The new model has a swing-out door with a rather difficult-to-open catch. The hair chamber is small, and has crevices that catch hair. One has to use the supplied brush to get most of the hair out, but some will remain nonetheless. The new one also seems to collect more hair in and around the comb than the old one.
The actual trimming function for the Qt4050 is fine, and is pretty much the same as the T980 - no surprise because the blade and comb design is identical. I found I could even swap in the narrow mustache blade from the T980 - the 4050 doesn't include one and I consider this a serious omission for something claiming to be a mustache trimmer. I use the trimmer for my beard and mustache only, not elsewhere on the body.
The vacuum works reasonably well - perhaps the "turbo" motor of the higher priced Philips Norelco Qt4070/41 Turbo Vacuum Beard, Stubble and Moustach Trimmer Pro would be stronger.
When using the trimmer without the comb - as one would do for trimming the neck or sideburns, the 4050 lacks the sliding gate that adjusts better for angle that the T980 had, though I'm unsure if this makes a difference in real use.
The T980 included a very nice carrying pouch for travel - no such thing for the Qt4050.
Since the T980 is still available from Amazon (as of this writing), I'd tend to recommend it over the Qt4050 if it weren't for the NiCd battery issue. However, the battery may not be a deal-killer for most people and both trimmers can be used on AC power even if the battery is dead (you'd be astonished at how many similar products can't be run on AC.) The Qt4050 is by no means a bad product - it's better than those from other manufacturers I have used (and that's quite a few.) It's just disappointing in comparison to its predecessor.

* It is light and maneuverable.
* It is self-contained: there are no separate parts and trimming guides to lose.
* You can adjust the trimming length WHILE the unit is running, unlike other brands where the unit has to be off to adjust the length.
* The trimming guide is removable, so you can adjust hairlines directly with the blades.
* The battery charge lasts for weeks with typical use. [EDIT, DECEMBER 2009: NEVERMIND! See below.]
* The blades are sharp and can be used to trim your beard very precisely.
I'm not really sure why they call it a "Stubble Trimmer" as it doesn't seem any different than all the other beard trimmers that I've used in the past -- the length goes from longish stubble to full beard length.
A real "stubble trimmer" would have far more precise trimming abilities at the low end. The trimming guide goes from 1-9 in length, and the only setting that could be said to be "stubble"-like is setting 1. Anything more than that and you're into short beard territory.
So if you're looking for something for excellent detail work with your stubble, this probably isn't for you. But if you're looking for an all around excellent beard trimmer, I highly recommend this product.

EDIT, DECEMBER 2009 -- Reduced to 2 stars because of poor battery life.
Well, folks, it was nice while it lasted. When I first got this stubble trimmer it held a charge for weeks. Now it barely holds enough charge to get through a couple trims. I will plug it in overnight and get perhaps 5 or 10 minutes of usage out of it -- and the motor doesn't stay fast throughout that whole time, but rather starts getting slower and slower until it is almost useless long before it COMPLETELY stops.
The same thing happened with a previous Norelco trimmer of mine, and a Norelco shaver. They are very impressive when you first get them, but within a few months the batteries just won't hold a charge anymore.
Very frustrating.

Philips Norelco Qt4070 Turbo Vacuum Beard, Stubble and Moustach Trimmer Pro, Black/silver Review

(More customer reviews)I have had a beard, and thus have had beard trimmers, for almost 30 years, so I have some pretty strong ideas about what a trimmer should and should not do. IT SHOULD NOT STAB YOU IN THE FACE! But that is exactly what the new QT4070/41 does.
For years I was wonderfully happy with Norelco's previous top-of-the-line model, the T980. I love the vacuum feature, the turbo setting cut my tough beard with gusto, and the length adjustment was generally adequate (though the settings were a bit wide apart, so 3 was too long and 2 was too short).
But the engineers at Norelco have taken a wonderfully designed T980 trimmer and screwed it up royally. The problem is with the guide comb. On the older T980, the guide comb completely covered the cutting head. But on the new Qt4070/41, the guide comb has tines that extend along the top and front of the cutting head, and END IN SHARP POINTS. So the cutting head sits exposed within a cavity between the ends of the two sets of pointy tines. Yeah, sure, that's what I need to drag across my face all bleery-eyed in the morning - pointed sticks! :-(
The new guide comb's design is woefully stupid for two reasons:
1) The length to which your hairs are cut will VARY depending on the angle with which you hold the trimmer against your skin. If you hold the upper face of the guide comb flat against your skin, you get a longer cut than if you allow your skin to span the gap between the two set of tines. And frankly, you KNOW you can't hold the trimmer at the same angle all over your face! BOTTOM LINE: AN UNEVEN TRIM!
2) Even if you are trying hard to keep the flat top of the guide comb flush against your face, you eventually have to turn a corner, like at your jaw line. I have used this Qt4070/41 about a dozen times now, and each time I have managed to jab myself with those stupid tines somewhere - in the jawline, in the chin, in the lip, etc. I know it's just a matter of time before I (a) break a tine, or (b) draw blood. BOTTOM LINE: A PAINFUL TRIM
My advice: QUICK! Buy a T980 before it is discontinued and all bought up! Maybe Norelco will fix the Qt4070/41 by the time you wear out your T980.
